Discovering Italian roots through a family heritage tour in Southern Italy
A few months ago, I was contacted by David from the United States. He was searching for documents related to his great-grandparents from Calvanico, a charming village in the province of Salerno, in Southern Italy. His ancestors had emigrated to America in the late 1800s, and David wanted to uncover the story behind his Italian roots. After exchanging several emails and family details, I began my Italian ancestry research. By consulting local archives and parish records, I was able to trace his family tree all the way back to the late 1700s. Since David and his wife were spending a few days in Sorrento with their two little boys (aged two and six), we decided to turn his research into a genealogy experience — a personal visit to the hometown of his ancestors.
Visiting Calvanico: A Journey Into Family History
When we arrived in Calvanico, we were joined to everyone’s surprise by David’s brother, who was also vacationing nearby with his wife and their five children. It became a true family reunion in Italy!
We started our day with a coffee in the village square, watching the children play while I presented all the documents and explained the family connections I had uncovered. Afterwards, the Vice Mayor of Calvanico, Francesco Gismondi, warmly welcomed us at the town hall and showed us the original 1861 birth register of David’s great-grandmother, Rosaria. It was an emotional and unforgettable moment for everyone. We took photos next to the town banner, and the Vice Mayor kindly gifted the family a book about the history of Calvanico.
Meeting the Locals and Tracing More Roots
Before leaving, we met some elderly residents who shared memories and stories about other local families who had emigrated to the United States around the same time as the Noels’ ancestors. Their stories added even more depth and emotion to the experience.
We ended the day with a beautiful photo of the Noel family together with the villagers — a perfect image of connection between past and present, America and Italy.
A Family Heritage Experience to Remember
Helping David and his family reconnect with their Italian heritage was deeply meaningful. Every family search in Italy tells a unique story, and this one was a reminder that our roots can bridge generations and continents.
